Frequency Response Analysis, An Enabling Technology to Assess Mechanical Integrity of Power Transformers

Prof. Ahmed Abu-Siada, PhD

Curtin University

Abstract

Power transformers play significant role in electric power transmission and distribution networks. To maintain the transformer within the expected harsh operational environment, reliable and intelligent condition monitoring techniques should be adopted. While there are several techniques currently used by industry to monitor the condition of power transformers based on its insulating system and diagnose any existing faults, most of these techniques are either offline and/or exhibit inconsistent interpretation process.

In this presentation, the concept of one technique, Frequency response Analysis (FRA) will be elaborated. Current FRA industry practice to assess transformer winding mechanical integrity will be covered. Limitation of current measurement/interpretation techniques will be highlighted. Research direction to overcome these limitations will be also presented.

Biography

Ahmed Abu-Siada received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Ain Shams University, Egypt, in 1998, and the Ph.D. degree from Curtin University, Australia, in 2004, all in electrical engineering. He is currently a full Professor and the head of the electrical and computer engineering discipline at Curtin University. His research interests include power electronics, power system stability, condition monitoring, and power quality. He has published over 300 articles in these fields of research. He is the Chair of the IEEE Western Australia section, founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a regular reviewer for various IEEE Transactions.
